The D.C. Police Union is pleased that Mayor Bowser has nominated Peter Newsham as the Chief of Police for the Metropolitan Police Department. As the head of the police union, I have had the pleasure of working with Chief Newsham since taking office in April of 2016.
Chief Newsham, after serving 14 years as an Assistant Chief of Police, brings and intimate familiarity with the inner workings of our police department. In addition, from what we have seen, Chief Newsham has the best interests of our members and our community at heart.
Since taking over as the Interim Chief of Police, in September of 2016, Chief Newsham has proven that he is willing to work with the Union on issues that involve officer safety and our members’ working conditions. These bargained for advancements will aid our members with providing the best police service to the neighborhoods that we protect on a daily basis.
We look forward to an expedient confirmation process. It is our hope that the D.C. City Council will recognize the value Chief Newsham, an internal candidate that rose from the rank and file, will bring to our City as the next Chief of Police for the Metropolitan Police Department.
